The Hippo was born in 1955 as a fun desktop item for managing pencils with its hinged mouth. Kay Bojesen's imaginative family of wooden figurines has a very special appeal for both children and adults. A classic and a dear friend for life – from being a popular interior piece in the playroom to a much-loved design icon in a home. The black hippo is crafted from beechwood and painted with blackboard paint, so you can write messages, little notes or use it as a desktop checklist. The white chalk is provided in the box. The 3.5" oak hippo includes a matching pencil, making it very giftable.

Kay Bojesen saw himself first and foremost as a craftsman, a silversmith devoted to creating objects of purpose and permanence. For him, true design was born from function, not ornament. Every piece was shaped to endure, to serve, and to quietly enrich everyday life. Trained in the renowned workshop of Georg Jensen in the early 1900s, Bojesen was grounded in Danish Art Nouveau before embracing the clean principles of functionalism. Silver remained his favored medium, admired for its luminous surface and refined simplicity, where form itself became the decoration. Today, his creations stand as enduring icons of Danish design, celebrated worldwide for their balance of craftsmanship, character, and lasting beauty.
